Magic World Championships

The Magic World Championships, the proper christmas in December, starts today! Over the week, some of the best 24 players in the world will battle for the title of World Champion, and this weekend, teams from all over the world will compete in the Magic World Cup. The streaming is found here.

My money is on Reid Duke getting a poetic revenge from last year’s runner-up place to be crowned champion this year.

The most interesting format the players will play is by far Vintage Masters draft. This is the online-only draft format, and apparently packs will be created in Magic Online, re-created with real cards, sleeved and then sealed for the players. This means that we can actually see someone first-pick a real Black Lotus, something that, outside cube, probably have never happened before, as Booster Drafting wasn’t really a thing common in the very early days of the game.

Of course, I’m rooting for Team Sweden in the Magic World Cup. The team consists of Hall of Famer Olle Råde, Worlds 2010 semifinalist Love Janse, and Poya Nobari, led by team captain Joel Larsson. This starts on Friday, and the teams will compete in Team Sealed and Unified Standard.

Here’s to a week of some awesome Magic coverage!
